The website Newseum.org has a lovely page that not only reprints the classic definition of the spirit of Christmas, but shows a clipping of the original unsigned editorial, which ran in the New York Sun on Sept. 21, 1897 in response to a letter, written by Virginia O’Hanlon. “Dear editor,” she wrote, “I am eight years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus…”
On Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. Eastern / 7 p.m. Central on CBS, you can see what is only the latest entertainment based on or inspired by this letter.
